Baby Skin Care - three golden
rules
- Avoid harsh detergents
and soaps.
Use mild, gentle baby formulations.
Clean diaper area gently with
warm water and cotton wool,
or for babies 3mths and older
with alcohol free wipes. Always
dry babies skin after cleaning,
especially between the folds.
- Avoid irritating skin's
pH
Skin has a slightly acidic
pH (acid mantle) which may
be displaced through irritation
or harmful bacteria. To avoid
this use cleansers that help
maintain the skins pH level.
To avoid irritations from
chemicals in new clothing
or soap detergents you should
wash all new clothes and linen
before using on baby. For
the first few months wash
babys clothes separately.
Use a gentle detergent and
double rinse.
- Avoid exposing babies
under 6mths to the sun.
Babies over 6mths should
wear sun protection, minimum
SPF15 and a sunhat. A baby
can get sunburnt in 10minutes,
even on cloudy days.
Cleansing routine
A new babys skin is not
the perfectly soft skin
we associate with babies.
In the first few days newborns
skin will appear red and
be peeling and flaking.
Soon your baby's skin will
fill out and get smoother.
Newborns do not need a bath
every day but they should
be 'topped and tailed' as
follows:
Eyes
Gently wipe outwards with
cotton wool moisted with
cooled boiled water.
Ears and Nose
Use a safety cotton bud
or cotton wool moistened
with luke warm water and
wipe a) behind and over
the ear b) with a fresh
safety bud or cotton wool
wipe around baby's nose.
Safety cotton buds cannot
be inserted into baby's
ears or nose.
Face
Using cotton wool and water
gently wipe baby's cheeks,
forehead, mouth, chin and
neck.
Hands
Clean between the fingers
and the palms and backs
of hands.
Bottom
Clean bottom at every nappy
change. Holding baby's ankles
in one hand, wipe bulk of
mess away with nappy. Using
damp cotton wool wipe tummy
and top of legs. Wipe girls
from front to back. Wipe
boys penis downwards and
clean around his testicles.
Clean babys bottom and backs
of the thighs. Dry babys
skin.
Feet
Clean in between the
toes and dry.
